Lake Shasta Caverns.

This cave is spectacular, It starts with a boat ride across Lake Shasta. Once off the boat you proceed to board a shuttle bus which winds its way up the mountain to the cave entrance. The view at the cave entrance and exit is just amazing which is several thousand feet above the lake.

The Cavern is located about 15 minutes north of Redding. If travelling from Sacramento it should take about 2- 1/2 hours to arrive at the cave depending on traffic. The journey took us about 4- 1/2 hours from our home town of "Murphy's" which is located about 60 miles due east of the Modesto, Stockton area. I recommend you stay in Redding if your trip will take more than a day. Redding has plenty of lodging, fuel stations and restaurants.

Man made tunnels help you gain access to the cavern. They are well lit and easy to maneuver through. Once in, the rooms are large and at no point did I feel confined or claustrophobic. Believe it or not I am claustrophobic, but have learned to deal with it over the years.

The formations we saw were absolutly spectacular. Every room we went in had something new to see. Some of the formations were pure white and untouched. Others went from ceiling to floor showing the twisting route the water took as it created them. The last room is by far the most amazing in the entire cave and luckily the guide allows you the most time there to soak it all in.

I've been on many cave tours and have heard my share of tour guides. I can say with out a doubt, the tour guide we had here at Lake Shasta Caverns was the best i've ever had. She was also a great sport when it came to my antics.
